HISTORY OF THE PEOPLE OF THE SEA

I

This is the beginning.
There was a vast ocean.
There was no time before it.
There was no space that was not it.
It knew nothing but itself.

This is the Woman who is the ocean.
All things come out of Her body.
She is the Nameless One
Who is called T_____ ,
Or Woman from Whom All Things Come.

All things came out of Her body
In this order:
first came the land and earth,
then came the sky,
then came the stars,
then came the moon,
then came the sun,
then came the rivers and streams,
then came the planets,
then came a living smudge,
then came the plants,
then came the insects,
then came the trees,
then came the fish,
then came the scaled animals,
then came the hairy animals.

II

T_____ smiled at what She had done.
Her smiling made Her suck in some of the ocean water.
She formed this into people that came out of Her.
She said to them, I name you PEOPLE OF THE SEA for
from sea are you made and from sea do you come.
From henceforth shall you be called.

When the people were completely formed so that their skin was shiny,
She made a big wave in the ocean and put the People in the center of it.
She sent the wave toward an island.

So came the People of the Sea, or the Shiny Skins, and their island was known as The Womb Outside of the Sea.

When the People landed on the island, they were naked and ignorant.

This was the first day.

On the second day, they were covered with water.

On the third day, they heard a distant bird shrieking.

On the fourth day, the sun changed the water to vapor.

On the fifth day, they rose up like flowers.

On the sixth day, they made honor to the sun.

On the seventh day, they felt the darkness in the blades of grass.

On the eighth day, they acquired wisdom.

On the ninth day, they learned the song of T_____ .

On the tenth day, they sang to the grunting sow.

On the eleventh day, they heard the wind stirring the waters.

On the twelfth day, they heard the roar of the ocean.

On the thirteenth day, they returned to the ocean.

Then T_____ , Woman from Whom all Things come, spoke to them:

I have many names. I am in all places.
Wherever you go, you will hear me.
Wherever you go, you will be a part of me.
Wherever you go, you will return to me.

None escape me.
None flee from me.
None disobey me.

If you love life, you will love me.
If you loathe life, you will fear me.
But none will escape me.

III

On the fourteenth day, the man walked out of the sky.
His name was Dethradarg.
He said, People of the Sea, I have come to live with you
so that I may teach you all things.

Dethradarg taught them all things.

He taught them how to catch fish.
He taught them to grow corn and millet.
He taught them the wild edible plants.
He taught them how to make the parts of trees into houses and clothing.

Then he taught them the secret of healing and the powers of the mind.
He showed them the secret prayers to the sun and moon.
He opened their eyes to the quiet of their hearts.
He set the animals into the pastures and gave them milk.
He drew them into large circles and taught them singing.
He made their toes long and hard and instructed them in dancing.
He made them face to the east in the morning and the west at sunset.
He gave them the ancient chants of protection.
He divided them two into sexes and made them love and oppose one another.
He gave them children and made them love the children.
He raised flowers on the tombs of the Ancient Ones and made their hoary voices blossom.
He taught them to love the night.
He pointed to the face and body of Night Sky Woman and said remember Her.
He taught them science and mathematics and showed them how to rule these with their dreams.
He gave them tools and machinery.
He warned them that tools and machinery must never obscure the sun or they would die.
He made the hills purple in May and blood red in the Autumn.
He danced on the hill so that all could see him.

Thus was he, Dethradarg, who came to them.

When the night came, Dethradarg said to them:

People of the Sea, I give you
these things. They are the gifts of your Mother who created you, who is my Mother. Now She will give you one final gift. Look among the trees of your forests and pick eighteen which are the trees of power. So the People of the Sea picked the 18 Trees of Power. Then Dethradarg said to them: of these 18 Trees of Power, thirteen will show their power each at a different month of the year. Select these trees and to each give a name that is a different sound. So the People of the Sea choose the 13 trees and gave to each a name that was a different sound. Then Dethradarg said: arrange the remaining five trees into a plan of life and give to each a name that is a different sound. So the People of the Sea did this. They arranged the five trees into the 5 Trees of Life and named each tree with a different sound.

Then Dethradarg said: you are now the Chosen People, oh, People of the Sea, for you have the gift of knowledge. You have a sacred calendar that is divided into 13 months and 5 seasons. Each month is named for one of the Trees of Power. The seasons are the 5 Trees of Life and the months are the 13 Trees of the Earth. Each tree is named with a different sound. Each of these sounds is a letter in your alphabet. Now, you are a sacred people for every act that you perform on Earth will be performed on a sacred day. And each word that you utter or write will be sacred for it will be formed of sacred letters.

This is the secret that you know and it must remain a secret. Tell it not to
your neighbors or your friends. Tell it only to your lovers, for it is a secret as long as it is told in love and from lover to lover. When it is no longer a secret, you will be destroyed.

Then Dethradarg said: now I must leave you. And the People of the Sea who were now the Chosen People, said: no, do not leave us.

But I must said Dethradarg. Let that be your first lesson of life here on the Earth. But I will come back to you once a year to help you remember me and what I have taught you. Dethradarg then flew into the Oak Tree, who's name is Dar, and the People of the Sea watched him. Slowly Dethradarg's form began to fade until he had fused with Dar, the Oak. Then the Oak spoke to them: remember me, Tree of the Sun. Since my Mother breathed life into me, Oh Earth, She may kill me. And I fall in the forest of a thousand nights.

Rest lightly on this Earth and love it.
Love all things created by our Mother.
She, who men and women call OLOMA.
Touch lightly with Her in the bright day.
Cherish the storm and hurricane.
Suckle into Her night.
We are all particles of Her dust and no man or woman can be more.

Then the Oak Tree was silent and that silence lasted for one million years.

IV

Before Dethradarg came, there had just been the People. They had no reason to divide themselves. Now a leader rose up. Her name was Ashtamere or Fish Woman of the Star Nets and she was their first leader. Under her rule, the People of the Sea prospered, grew and were happy. She was known to have the wise eye of the lynx in the evening and to listen to all of her people and all creatures in the way that they could listen to themselves. The next leader was a man. His name was Oglimios, or Face That Points In 7 Directions. He founded farming and science and would listen to all of his people in silence so they never discovered that he ruled. Afterwards, from thence on, the sexes alternated as rulers. And these were called the 63 Generations of the Forest. After Oglimios came Eriu, and after Eriu came Adolfus and after Adolfus came Abtu, and after Abtu came Khenti-Amenti, and after Khenti-Amenti came Io, and after Io came Aeon, and after Aeon came Edda, and after Edda came Gyges, and after Gyges came Hretha, and after Hretha came Ophion, and after Ophion came Urth, and after Urth came Aetaeon, and after Aetaeon came Omphale, and after Omphale came Etana, and after Etana came Lamashtu, and after Lamashtu came Rabbin, and after Rabbin came Asheral, and after Asheral came Rudra, and after Rudra came Akka, and after Akka came Tammuz, and after Tammuz came Ker, and after Ker came Zalmoxis, and after Zalmoxis came Macha, and after Macha came Sabazius, and after Sabazius came Mater Cara, and after Mater Cara came El, and after El came Leda, and after Leda came Menanda, and after Menanda came Galata, and after Galata came Heracles, and after Heracles came Gula, and after Gula came Lugh and after Lugh came Ishtar, and after Ishtar came Ganesha, and after Ganesha came Dennitsa, and after Dennitsa came Gwyn, and after Gwyn came Durga, and after Durga came Agni, and after Agni came Kalima, and after Kalima came Ahura, and after Ahura came Arianhod, and after Arianhod came Adonai, and after Adonai
came Freya, and after Freya came Bassareus, and after Bassareus came Acamoth, and after Acamoth came Immani, and after Immani came Zoe, and after Zoe came Adam, and after Adam came Scotia, and after Scotia came Ixion, and after Ixion came Cerridwen, and after Cerridwen came Shamash, and after Shamash came Iduir, and after Iduir came Zagreus, and after Zagreus came Myrrh, and after Myrrh came Ymir, and after Ymir came Agatha, and after Agatha came Melchizedek, and after Melchizedek came Mari, and after Mari came Mithra, and after Mithra came Agnes.

And these were known as the Times of the Kings and Queens and the Generations of the Far Told Stories and the Ages of the Clear Pool, for no man or woman was apart from one another and no sun set that was not recognized.

IX

On the three thousand and ninth year after the creation, invaders came. Some say from the north, some say from the south, some say from the west. This was The Scorching Wind That Must Change Directions.

Who, or, why, did Our Mother send them, the People asked? So they implored Her: why, oh, why? But She did not fool them. As always, She did not answer.

And so the People knew the mystery for which there is no answer.

They asked Her three times at the new moon.
They asked Her three times at the full moon.
They asked Her three times at the old moon.
And She did not answer, so wise and powerful, She.

And then the People of the Sea knew that the only answer is no answer and they turned their eyes and faces to the east.

X

This was the time that was remembered and spoken about in the generation of Abraham and Arthur, when Cuchulainn, He of Dog's Breath, cut down the trees and made them to grow on the sides of the mountain, when giants, green as miraculous ice, strode across the islands of the oceans. They remembered that time when invaders came to the Womb Outside the Sea and devoured it, when the People of the Sea were dispersed and the sacred Yew was cracked. They remembered that time, in those other generations, when it was long gone, in the Age of the New Heroes, when men ruled. They remembered by their fires in the talking woman nights; they remembered what they no longer knew or could remember. For, as one generation passes into another, as one seed forms and dies to form another, so the ages, without knowing it or wishing it, murmur in their sleep from the mothers to the daughters and the fathers to the sons, whose mothers and fathers murmured it to them before and who told them also what they did not longer know. So, the stream passes by all and makes, unknown, our night eyes shine for what we can no longer remember.

And that time, long ago, when the dispersal came, and the People of the Sea broke like the clay vessel who is our Mother. And the pieces fled in various directions from the Womb Outside the Sea. Some went to Ireland and the British kingdom. Some went to the desert and the land of the wandering tribes. Some crossed back into Babylonia. Some found the mountains of Italy and Switzerland. Some made their peace in Croatia. Some became the kings and queens of Thrace. Some passed through Turkey and Afghanistan to India. Some came to the New World where they spoke with the elders of many tribes.

As they left and fled, they sang this song that was their last song together:

We, People of the Sea,
Our time has come to look
One last time at one another,
To hug our brothers and sisters
Whom we will never see again.

We do praise this time
That is our chosen destiny.
We look to the future and
Our new homes with bright eyes.
For, we are the Chosen People
And it is our duty to disperse.

The earth is a sad place today.
We say good-bye to our home
And know in our hearts
That the race of human beings
Must suffer and be like madmen
Until we, People of the Sea,
Are all together again.

Oh, long night that is to come.
Oh, dark ages of ignorance and stupidity.
When will you end?
When will I see my brothers and sisters?
When will I kiss my homeland?

PRAYER TO THE NIGHT
(The Nines)

Who is more powerful, the day or the night?

The day will burn out but the night will last forever.

Who loves the night?

The people with no eyes love the night for they have the gift to see the blackness.

Who looks into the blackness?

The marvelous bird who wakes at midnight.

Who looks into the eye of the bird?

The Mother of the Night.

Who drinks milk from the breasts of the Mother of the Night?

The stars, who suck their light from Her.

What do the stars light?

A hundred million, million ancestors.

What do the hundred million, million ancestors guard?

The stone of the unanswerable question.

Who stands behind the unanswerable question?

He, the Day That Will Not End.

Who is more powerful, the day or the night?

No one knows in the blackness to bright to see.
